Summary

From the outside, the Delaneys appear to be an enviably contented family。 Even after all these years, former tennis coaches Joy and Stan are still winning tournaments, and now they've sold the family business they have all the time in the world to learn how to 'relax'。 Their four adult children are busy living their own lives, and while it could be argued they never quite achieved their destinies, no-one ever says that out loud。

But now Joy Delaney has disappeared and her children are re-examining their parents' marriage and their family history with fresh, frightened eyes。 Is her disappearance related to their mysterious house guest from last year? Or were things never as rosy as they seemed in the Delaney household?

Thanks NetGalley for the ARC audio of this book! I love the accent of the narrator and how she gives great feeling in all the right places。 This book has a little bit of everything for me including humor, thriller, tiny bit of horror, and a little bit of romance。 I will be able to recommend this book to almost any of my patrons as it can fit in most any genre。 Also, if you are an empty nester parent , it will hit all of your raw emotions!

I thought I was truly going to enjoy this book as I’ve enjoyed two of her others, but IMO this was not her best work。 It was long, dragging, dull, underwhelming and simply boring。 After 65% into the book FINALLY something starts happening and you stop getting back stories for each character。 The build up was building up to practically nothing。 Then when you think, “okay it’s finally done they’ve figured it out” the book keeps on going for another hour in, what should’ve been the epilogue phase b I thought I was truly going to enjoy this book as I’ve enjoyed two of her others, but IMO this was not her best work。 It was long, dragging, dull, underwhelming and simply boring。 After 65% into the book FINALLY something starts happening and you stop getting back stories for each character。 The build up was building up to practically nothing。 Then when you think, “okay it’s finally done they’ve figured it out” the book keeps on going for another hour in, what should’ve been the epilogue phase but it was just part of the book。 It was odd to listen to the characters lives written during a pandemic。 I read to escape reality not read about it as well??? Apples Never Fall written by Liane Moriarty, narrated by Caroline Lee PUB DATE: Sept 14, 2021“The past could look very different depending on where you stood to look at it。” The Delaneys were once tennis champs。 Power couple Joy & Stan are renown for their tennis skills & recently retired from their successful tennis school business。 Their 4 grown children, Amy, Logan, Troy & Brooke were all tennis stars in their youth。 The Delaneys are well-known & loved but after 50 years of marriage, there is Apples Never Fall written by Liane Moriarty, narrated by Caroline Lee PUB DATE: Sept 14, 2021“The past could look very different depending on where you stood to look at it。” The Delaneys were once tennis champs。 Power couple Joy & Stan are renown for their tennis skills & recently retired from their successful tennis school business。 Their 4 grown children, Amy, Logan, Troy & Brooke were all tennis stars in their youth。 The Delaneys are well-known & loved but after 50 years of marriage, there is bound to be resentment, anger, hostility & secrets to hide。 The memory of events can look very different depending on who & when you are looking at it。 So, when 69-yo Joy suddenly disappears on Valentine’s Day 2020, the adult children are reluctant about reporting her missing knowing that their father will be the prime suspect。 The detectives have their own suspicions, as it starts to get murky and everything is not as it appears。 Last Sept, a young lady named Savannah appears at their door in the middle of the night with her face cut & bare-footed。 Joy immediately takes her in。 What really happened between then & now & why are the adult children trying to avoid talking about it? Savannah had become intimately involved in their lives。 Their children don’t particularly like her believing she is a con-artist。 We all know vulnerable gullible people like that in our lives & it can be infuriating when they won’t listen to reason。 Is it possible that Joy was desperate for attention & love herself? What was their marriage really like? And where is Savannah now? Family relationships are complex & complicated to say the least。 You can love a person but also believe they may be capable of bad behavior。 You can choose to stand by them no matter what or give up。 This is Moriarty’s talent – her astute perceptive way of writing about human flaws, behaviors & the dynamic multiple layers of relationships。 “Amazing to think something so beautiful could lie beneath the ugliness and all you had to do was peel it away”。 Apples Never Fall is a character-driven family drama/mystery with multiple POVs from the Delaney children, Joy & Stan, the detectives & side characters who are neighbors, the hairdresser, close friends, ex-in laws, etc。 As the layers of each character & their relationships unfolds, the drama intensifies。 It truly was am absorbing & fascinating read that reminds me of my own family, other people’s families & relationships & realizing that everyone has their own memories of events & reasoning。 Thank you Henry hlHolt Books for sending me a physical ARC & Macmillan Audio & Librofm for gifting me an ALC! 。。。more

The Delaney siblings are suddenly looking back at their childhood, for any signs their parent’s marriage wasn’t a happy one and like most couples they had the odd disagreement。 Joy seemed happy being a wife, mother, business and tennis partner of Stan。 Did she resent being the only one to cook the family meals, pack the school lunches, do endless loads of washing, did they all take what she did for granted and has she done a runner?Stan and Joy, had a young woman stay with them for six weeks last year, her name is Savannah, and could she have something to do with Joy’s disappearance? As the two detectives, family, friends and business acquaintances look back at life in the Delaney home, conversations, family interactions and celebrations can be viewed very differently and opinions vary。 Liane Moriarty has a way of layering a story, with lots of little details and moments, that makes you think about what really goes on behind closed doors and anything is possible。I received a copy of Apples Never Fall from NetGalley and Pan Macmilan Australia, it has the perfect amount of intrigue, mystery, suspense, anticipation and family drama, and five stars from me。https://karrenreadsbooks。blogspot。com/ 。。。more

Liane Moriarty is so incredible at developing multiple characters in her stories and this is no exception。 I felt like a member of the Delancey family。 The story is so well woven and each chapter feels like a delicious piece of juicy gossip told over the dinner table in your hometown, even if it sometimes is guiltily interesting。 Each chapter has its own twist all piecing together to the big finale - I could not put this one down!

Multiple POVs were perfect for this one and I really liked them on the parts that I listened to on audio! I highly recommend you add this to your list! 。。。more

While I enjoyed some parts of this book, I ended up disappointed overall。 I liked the mystery of what happened to Joy and who savannah was。 Once those things were resolved the book just fell flat for me though。 I think I wanted a big twist or something crazy to happen。 Overall for a domestic mystery thriller I felt like this book was a little lengthy。 Thank you to the publisher and goodreads giveaways for the arc。

The Delaney family is held in high regard in their community。 Tennis is their life。 When a stranger knocks on their door one night, everything changes。 Not more than a year later, Mrs。 Delaney has disappeared, and all eyes are on her husband 。 The story that follows is how a family reacts when the unbelievable has happened。 Do they shatter apart? Come together? A great family saga。
